PROVET & BAYER: SPONSORS OF THE APICULTURE & HONEY BEE PATHOLOGY TWO-DAY SEMINAR: Ε.Κ.Ε. 21 & 22/9/2013

PROVET and BAYER sponsored the two-day seminar on apiculture & honey bee pathology, organized by the Hellenic Veterinary Medical Society (HVMS) and held at HVMS premises during the weekend of 21 and 22 September 2013. The event, entitled “Main honey bee diseases and their control” covered the whole spectrum of apiculture and was divided into two parts, theory and practice. Although the event was of a specialized nature, it was successful and drew many participants, both from Athens and other areas of the country.

Distinguished speakers presented the following subjects:

  • general apiculture principles and common honey bee diseases in Greece (E. Papadopoulos, deputy professor, Thessaloniki Veterinary School)
  • implementation of the European pilot program for tracing losses of bee colonies (Dr D Vourvidis, Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food)
  • sampling and delivery of the material to the laboratory (Dr S Boutsini, Institute of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases)
  • allergy to bee venom: mechanisms and treatment (A Tyligada, deputy professor of the Athens Medical School & A. Chliva, Chief Supervisor of Allergiology Unit, Attiko EKPA),
  • Last but not least, the guest speaker from Bayer, Dr Klemens Krieger, focused on the interesting subject of “What kills the bees? Pesticides or parasites? During the practice session, coordinated by E Papadopoulos, the focus was on providing guidelines on the inspection of the colony presenting the apicultural tools, demonstrating the opening of the colony and the inspection of the bees and the bee brood.

The seminar was “transported” to the Hellenic Motor Museum on Saturday evening, where the participants had the chance to dine among impressive automobile exhibits and to experience a rare view of the Acropolis.
